INSIDE INFO: The following information comes to me from a guy who used to work for Columbia Gas. He claims to have gotten it from a current employee of that same company: "Columbia gas of Lawrence was repairing a high pressure gas line so they diverted all the gas into a low pressure line (for whatever dumb reason) and it was too much to handle. So far at least 26 houses have blown up and at least 2 people dead. They've evacuated 3 towns. Columbia gas is gonna lose their shirts in lawsuits. People are going to get fired and possibly see jail time.”
The NTSB will investigate a series of gas explosions and fires that destroyed homes and buildings in Andover, Lawrence, and North Andover Thursday night.
TRAVEL ALERT: Traffic is impacted as several ramps are closed on area highways, and the Haverhill commuter rail line is altering its route after dozens of explosions in the Merrimack Valley.
LATEST: As many as 8,000 homes are being inspected one by one this morning after thousands were displaced from their homes during a series of explosions in Andover, North Andover, and Lawrence.

Below is the statement released at 11 a.m. Friday by Columbia Gas:
What happened in the Merrimack Valley yesterday was a tragic incident. We are saddened to learn of the death of a young man as a result of these events . Our thoughts and continued support are with those who have been injured and affected. We are focused on providing as much support as possible to our customers, residents and communities. We are grateful for the community’s patience, as well as the tremendous support we have received from our first responder and law enforcement partners.
As part of response efforts, Columbia Gas crews need to visit each of the 8,600 affected customers to shut off each gas meter and conduct a safety inspection. More than 500 resources from several affiliated Columbia Gas companies and other utilities are currently mobilizing to provide assistance.
We urge customers in the affected area to call us and arrange for us to meet you at your property to make sure the house is cleared and your gas meter is shut off. Please provide us with your name, address and cell phone number so we can call you when we are ready to access your property.
