I've lived all over the US, but have been in this mountain county for almost 10 years. I've wanted to move, even immigrate out of the US. My husband and I have been discussing it more these days. But it's not that easy to move. My mom is alone now that my dad passed and I'm not sure I want to leave her here. Thankfully, I come from good progressive stock. My parents used do be religious but left it behind long ago. My dad made sure that we didn't have any religious bullshit to honor him after his death. So I'm fortunate that I don't have to deal with religious family.
Things have only changed in this community to be even more evangelical conservative since Trump. After Obama, the racism has really showed itself worse than ever. This is the area that raised hundreds of dollars to fly a humongous Confederate flag over the main highway to counter-protest the BLM movement. There's not one Planned Parenthood in the county or surrounding counties. It's mind-numbingly stupid around here.
