U.S. stocks plunged Wednesday with tech company shares leading the market down at a breathtaking speed as investors worried about the Washington-Beijing trade war and global economic growth as well as domestic threats.
By mid-afternoon the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average had tumbled more than 2 percent -- or more than 500 points -- and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index was down more than 2.5 percent at a three-month low.
Amazon shares dipped into correction territory, falling more than 10 percent from their record closing high on Sept. 4. Facebook shares fell more than 2.5 percent, Google stock had given up 2.56 percent of its value and shares of Twitter were down 6.83 percent.
The scope and speed of the session's fall appeared to have seriously rattled experienced investors: The CBOE VIX Index, a closely watched measure of investor anxiety that is sometimes called the "fear gauge," jumped more than 25 percent to its highest level since April 11.
