NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other mayors from around the country tried in vain to gain access to a federal holding facility for immigrant children in Texas Thursday morning.

De Blasio said at a press conference that he anticipated being kept in the dark about what is happening inside the facility in Tornillo, near the border with Mexico, where migrant children are being held after separation from their parents.

"We fully expect to not be told the truth, we fully expect to be turned away the way senators and congressmen have been turned away just trying to get the honest truth about what’s happening to these children just as all of you have been doing," de Blasio said.

A video shows de Blasio and others approach a chain-link fence at the facility. De Blasio asks to speak to a supervisor. The video then shows a police officer from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service telling the group that he will allow them to stay outside the fence but that they cannot block traffic or come inside.

The MEDIA are desperate to get pictures of riots to show the rest of the world that America is crazy. The UN will never come here because THEY WILL KNOW WHEN WE'VE HAD ENOUGH

Sir, to my knowledge everyone is unavailable," the officer told de Blasio, according to the mayor's spokesman.

The mayors had wanted to tour the facility, which has several tents, to witness the conditions and check on the children.

Although President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday ending the policy of separating children from families (a policy that just a few days ago Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said didn't exist), the order doesn't outline what will happen to the families who have already been separated.

De Blasio said separated immigrant children he met at a social services agency in New York City on Wednesday night told him they have no idea when or if they will see their parents again.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed that as many as 700 children are in New York State. But he doesn't know where because the Trump administration put a gag order on the agencies working with the children.

"These children have certainly suffered psychological and physiological trauma," he said.

BALTIMORE - Former Baltimore Police Detective Daniel Hersl was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the litany of crimes perpetrated by the Gun Trace Task Force, a rogue unit of plain clothes police officers.

Hersl is the sixth member of the GTTF to be sentenced. In February he was found guilty by a federal jury on counts of racketeering and robbery. Hersl was one of two officers from the eight-member team who went to trial. The other, Detective Marcus Taylor, was also found guilty at trial. He was also sentenced to 18 years in prison at a hearing on June 7.

Hersl's hearing began with a motion for a new trial, which judge Catherine Blake denied.

Federal prosecutors asked the judge for a sentence of 20 years but Judge Blake settled on 18 in part to send a clear message.

"I believe that Judge Blake had her basis of giving this particular sentence and she articulated on the record," said Hersl's attorney William Purpura, "Am I happy with the sentence, the answer is no but I understand the reason for the sentence."

Daniel Hersl was represented by his brothers and sisters in court, some of whom testified to his character calling him a good man and a great father to his 10-year-old son.

Purpura says Hersl does intend to appeal.

ADELPHI, Md. - The University System of Maryland Board of Regents has decided to rescind three honorary degrees granted to famous comedian Bill Cosby following his conviction on three counts of sexual assault in April.

The three institutions in the university system who awarded the degrees – University of Baltimore, University of Maryland, College Park, and University of Maryland, Eastern Shore – requested the board take such action.

“As Maryland’s public university system, we are collectively and individually committed to reducing the incidence of sexual misconduct and to responding when it occurs,” USM Chancellor Robert Caret said in a statement. “The universities’ requests, and the board’s decision, to rescind honorary degrees awarded to an individual later convicted of sexual assault reaffirms our values and sends a signal to all students, faculty, and staff across our institutions and to the people of Maryland. Sexual misconduct will not be tolerated, much less honored.”
