She served three years in the Santa Cruz County Jail, where she finally became drug-free during her last few months as an inmate. Tichelman said drugs were flowing through the jail, but she finally found the will to stop using drugs.
Her family's emotional support helped her survive her time in jail.
"I was prepared to go to prison for 15 years. I have the ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel, that comes from my family," Tichelman said. "I had a feeling, that as long as I did the right thing and held on, that things would turn out OK."
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents deported Tichelman as soon as she was released from jail. But she said she feels safer there.
"I'm glad I got deported," she said. "Santa Cruz police hated me so much."
Tichelman describes her life today as a "complete 180."
She said she's living clean and sober in Canada, and thinks about Hayes every day.
"I am working in the hospitality industry. I'm so happy (that) I found a workplace where I feel accepted, knowing that I can be a normal taxpaying citizen, and get up and go to work. That feels good," Tichelman said.
She also volunteers for a nonprofit that helps homeless and incarcerated women reintegrate back into society. Tichelman is studying to become a social worker specializing in helping people who are struggling with homelessness, mental health, drug addictions, and transitioning from prison back to society.

ADAMS RUN, S.C. (WCBD) - WCBD in Charleston reports Republican Congressional Candidate Katie Arrington was injured in a fatal crash Friday evening.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a two-car collision around 9:00 p.m. in the 7400 block of Hwy 17 southbound in Adams Run.
Department spokesman Capt. Roger Antonio says Arrington was a passenger in a car that was struck by a driver traveling the wrong direction.
Arrington and the woman she was with, Jacquelin Goff, were both transported to MUSC with serious injuries. There were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene.
Arrington's campaign manager, Michael Mule, tells WCBD that Arrington got out of surgery early Saturday morning and remains at the hospital with her husband. Mule says Arrington sustained a fracture to her back and several broken ribs.
Arrington also has injuries which required a major surgery to remove part of her small intestine and a portion of her colon. The main artery in her legs has a partial collapse, requiring a stint for treatment.
Mule says additional surgeries will be needed, including another one likely on Saturday.
Arrington is expected to be hospitalized for the next two weeks.
According to Mule, Arrington was on her way to Hilton Head, where she was supposed to receive an award on Saturday.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Traffic Unit is investigating the accident.
Arrington currently holds the position of State Representative of District 94, which include parts of Charleston and Dorchester counties. Arrington defeated Rep. Mark Sanford in the Republican primary for South Carolina's District One Congressional seat on June 12.
The southbound lanes of Hwy 17 were closed for hours after the accident.
