NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge in New York City says a legal challenge to the addition of a citizenship question to the census form is strong enough to go forward.
U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman told lawyers at a hearing Tuesday there was an appearance of "bad faith" behind the decision by President Donald Trump's administration to add the question.
About two dozen states and cities have sued the U.S. government to block the plan for the 2020 census, which has set off worries among Democrats that immigrants will dodge the survey altogether.
Supporters had argued that obtaining more data on the voting age population of citizens will help the Department of Justice enforce the Voting Rights Act.
There has been no comment from the Department of Commerce, which oversees the census.

It’s flying on a broom
Lived in a town that got turned into a compound. I was a young man, early 20's. Father was leader of town/compound. He accidently threw up some leaves that got caught up in the atmosphere (projected via hand or perhaps actually via machine) at one point that caused it to rain (acid rain, or something else horrible). War happened and forced us all to turn our town into a compound.
My father invented stuff. He had means to collect water, but much of this was forbidden knowledge I had to keep hidden from the people as everyone might turn against him out of fear of this technology.
People lived in old brick buildings turned into bunkers. At the beginning many paired off. There were showers where this took place. I kept getting busy trying to make things better for people. Some were sick and starving. I still wanted to find my mate as well, but kept having problems finding one. Oddly it seamed many of the girls were redheads, at least in the section of the compound (town) I lived in.
At one point I ended up playing with some technology on the other side of town (which seemed a little more affluent). I did not know but it was an old war-time plane that was converted into a towering restaurant. I was making the whole place shake as the plane's engines turned on, scaring everyone in that towering restaurant. At one point I even saw an alien being, blue-ish and stocky. He had to remove his face, and there was sort of a robotic being underneath. He did this out of fear. The rest of the dream kind of faded off, I tried dreaming more... but certainly at one point in the dream, before, I ended up throwing those same crushed leaves into the air, and it seemed I ended the need to stay in the town, but the elders of the town had a plan for when that happened. Holographic displays shown all around town and a looped recording stating we were the leaders of mankind played.
Advanced military vehicles came out and soldiers were in them. Apparently we were going to take over the world (which everyone thought was in shambles from war at this point, though I don't know if that really was the case).
British police are reportedly investigating three new sexual assault allegations against Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey, including one accusation that dates back more than two decades, NBC News reported.
The allegations against Spacey, the former artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London, were first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by police to Variety.
The new reports come after actor Guy Pearce, who co-starred with Spacey in the 1997 noir thriller "L.A. Confidential," told an Australian talk show host that Spacey was a "handsy guy."
London's Metropolitan Police had previously confirmed three other investigations against Spacey, bringing the total to six. He also faces a wave of sexual misconduct allegations in the United States.
