But I'm personally familiar with a few well read pagans and they're all really serious about it. It's not a religion in the same sense as Christianity is.

Paganism is integrated into the spirit and animus of the world rather than a deity figure.

In other words paganism was spiritualist rather than religious until Christianity forced it to double down as a reactionary measure and really become a religion.

This flexibility and belief in universality is why the Romans were able to syncretize almost every religion they encountered into their pantheon.
