This is not new, the Patriarch of Russia has always been impossible to work with. They always view themselves as the "Third Rome" and claims that justifies their claim of being higher than the Patriarch of Constantinople.

2018-09-16 18:16:05 UTC

Even then you have other Patriarchs that have cut ties with each other. Most recently, the Patriarch of Antioch cut ties with the Patriarch of Jerusalem because Jerusalem built a church in Antioch's justification. This happened in 2014.

@FLanon @Ghawk It's ridiculous to call the Russian Orthodox Church "impossible to work with" when the Ecumenical Patriarch is trying to forcibly reorganize the ROC and split one of its autonomous jurisdictions from it to form a new one, in collaboration with the Ukrainian government which persecutes Orthodox Christians.

2018-09-16 19:40:17 UTC

Plus the ROC was founded in one of the parishes that the Ecumenical Patriarch seeks to remove from ROC jurisdiction

2018-09-16 19:40:23 UTC

It's absolutely ridiculous.

2018-09-16 19:46:15 UTC

You could even argue that the patriarchates could be like, somehow reflections of their countries or something, but Antioch and Constantinople are in the same country (even though Syria claims Antioch too), and the Ecumenical Patriarch also wants ROCOR (ROC Outside of Russia) to maintain all of the former Imperial possessions like Alaska.

2018-09-16 19:50:58 UTC

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew doesn't really do anything to help the other Orthodox churches or anything, and I get that, but he should stop infighting with Russia and start turning his attention towards the Turkish threat.

2018-09-17 01:28:57 UTC

@Nuke You do realize a Soviet appointed bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church gave the OCA autonomy in the 1970's. The Patriarch of Russia has always wanted to be above the Partriach of Constantinople. Also, the ROC Out side of Russia was only established after the Russian Revolution.

As for Patriarch Bartholomew not wanting to help other churches, most churches have a high degree of autonomy from Constantinople.

2018-09-17 01:46:20 UTC

@Ghawk ROCOR was established at the collapse of the Russian Empire by emigre who sought to prevent Soviet influence from affecting the rest of the Church. It is true that Patriarch Alexius I of Moscow approved a decision, but Russian Orthodox faithful in America merely sought his consent. It wasn't like the Commies actually took over the Church or anything.

2018-09-17 01:47:07 UTC

Also, if you want to force the Russian Orthodox to withdraw from Ukraine and Crimea, you better be willing to take care of your mess--not just willing to destroy the Church in Ukraine.

2018-09-17 01:47:47 UTC

The Russian Orthodox Church is going to be where ever there is a Russian community that it can serve.

2018-09-17 01:48:14 UTC

@Nuke Are they demanding that the ROC withdraws from Ukraine?

2018-09-17 01:48:33 UTC

I have seen ROC churches in Serbia, so if that is a demand, that is stupid.

2018-09-17 01:50:10 UTC

Yeah, they want them to give up all of their churches in Ukraine and Crimea and give them to a new organization.

2018-09-17 01:51:33 UTC

Orthodox in Ukraine atm are basically persecuted because the Ukrainian Government prefers Catholics and non-canonical Orthodox churches; only 10% of Ukraine is actually Orthodox at this point, and it's believed that it's even lower now.

2018-09-17 01:52:18 UTC

Also, I'm not sure how the UOC is getting money atm, but I think they're probably not going to be able to pay for church maintenance if this goes through.

2018-09-17 01:55:11 UTC

AFAIK Constantinople hasn't even made any statements of opposition to the Ukrainian government's opposition to the Orthodox church.

I'm not sure where to meta-post, so I'll do it here: So do you guys actually do anything? All I see is people posting polls and then calling them fake. Why not make dedicated channels for operations. There are people here doing stuff online and IRL, but this discord is really unorganized. Why not start a meme campaign and agree to post it once a day on /pol/, twitter, or a subreddit? E-activism seems better than just analysis. I see so much autistic determination here, but it seems like it's not being utilized.

2018-09-18 17:27:41 UTC

@Amsel good idea, we were pushing ops months ago, but it seems a lot of people are focused IRL

2018-09-18 17:27:50 UTC

I am doing stuff online as well, on my own time

2018-09-18 17:28:00 UTC

What are your ideas for OPs

2018-09-18 17:28:07 UTC

and let me stress the idea - we ARE doing things

2018-09-18 17:28:15 UTC

don't let the lack of operations-discussions here fool you

2018-09-18 17:30:45 UTC

@Amsel by the way, one reason why this Discord isn't so organized is because quite a few seem averse to being ordered around
