While he didn't win, he dominated the election in the Deep South
because of ran on a platform of returning to segregation and undoing Johnson's policies
Johnson's immigration and civil rights action saw a swift backlash in the South, resulting in Wallace's rise and surge in the vote next election
Not only that, but Nixon himself still won a majority of the EC.
Apart from Johnson's own home state, the Democrats were effectively eliminated in the South.
