what they do to generate thrust

they are propelling gas out the back end to push it forward

thats all you need to say

in an atmosphere they have something to push off of

and something to push into

which slows down the rocket

in a vacuum they have nothing to push off of

rocket won't move

and nothing to push into

you have a guy with a master's degree in technical physics

if you let the gas out at a very fast speed and a very high pressure, you're going to fall backwards from the force of the gas ejecting out the tank

if you let it drizzle out nope
