Probably not... baofeng has alot of knockoffs for such a cheap radio
Retevis is a step up for cheap still
Woxun
Then you get into kenwood and icom for the mid to high end
Really, baofengs are more than 99% of people will ever use
They're something to learn on and yeet into a bag if things aren't good
Looking for something a step or two up, $100?
Hopefully higher range
They all have the same range really
Feature sets and build quality is what changes
I'm up for suggestions, going to use the ones I ordered to get a feel for things
The ham radio technician test doesn't look very hard at all. Found a couple phone apps that seem to do a good job of prepping you for the test
It's not for the basic level... there are 3 levels though
The practice apps are the way to go thoughm
Which level is needed to legally use something like a baofeng? The higher class licenses looked to be all lower frequencies
"Lower" yes... but HF you can use to literally talk to the other side of the world with no repeater
I am very familiar with the physics of it all, just don't know the law part.
Lowest level is all you probably want though
My undergrad research was in radio astronomy. I built some wave guides and amplifiers
I would just do all three tests then, you should have no issues
FCC said tough luck, so we had to get a different broadband filter
But good luck either getting into a remote test, and all these commie governors are keeping shit locked down and ham clubs are staying closed.
Yeah
Fucking tyrants
Yeah, there really isn't enforcement of the radio laws
I'd like the highest rank license eventually. If nothing else, for the shorter handle.
Its just im a budget.. so im looking for a good comms my limit is $300
Ill look around
> Yeah, there really isn't enforcement of the radio laws
@EDDSkitz quite a few NALs get sent out by the FCC for dumb shit. They don’t prosecute, they fine...and heavily.
That guy was licensed, being dumb, and refused to stop multiple times... not even close to what we're talking about, and SUPER rare.
Most fines have gone to businesses or small fire departments for using FRS channels.
I picked up some BaoFeng MURS for around my property. I'll be getting the standard units once the tyrant unlocks the state and I can take the basic ham test.

@EDDSkitz Anyone including Business is allowed to use FRS...Walmart used to until they discovered MURS.
Watchdog news network said someone was shot. Not a bean bag!
