police enforce the status quo even if the status quo is blatantly evil
they autonomously expand as they can get away with, to pad their pensions and to make sure there are new grunts justifying new layers of management and new promotions, new pensions, etc
most towns and boros are in disrepair. infrastructure is severely outdated to accomodate traffic, and it's crumbling apart.
but the police always have brand new vehicles
it's like state approved extortion in the name of upholding common law

the police have a great racket. It's politically unfavorable to try to fund them less than before ("The mayor doesn't care about your SAFETY! Is he SOFT ON CRIME???") and on top of it there is no equivalent of malpractice for police that I am aware of
it's about enforcing the law against the people who are willing to pay for it
if a patient comes in with a complaint and it turns out to be a disease I didn't catch, if someone takes me to court and it turns out most other docs would've actually caught it, I get fucked over
but if you're an unpopular politician who didn't fund police that year and something bad happens and the police couldn't make it in time, what happens to them?

for example, I knew a guy who found a nigger in his car sleeping
he went to some party and then afterwards he looked in his car and there was this random nig sleeping in his back seat
when he opened the car the nig bolted so he chased him down the street
and then him and his friend beat him up good and called him a nigger
and the cops got called and they come and ask him what happened
he says "...yeah I found some asshole sleeping in my car so I beat him up and called him a nigger"
the cop says "if you hadn't called him that I woulda let it slide but now it's a hate crime"
he did a year for that
the cop could've let that slide too, but he didn't
he could've pretended he didn't hear
