instead of hundreds of thousands of mail order ones the label could lie about
all of the most popular underground bands sold way more than they are listed as as neilsen only counted in chain store sales rung up
like of course heartwork sold at least double those 270,000 copies
or so
how can you be on the cover of guitar magazines, have display cardboard cutouts of teh band and not sell a ton?
they just never reported the direct sales
or the trades
like euronymous was a big earache distributor. he got everything through trades of continental and scandinavian bands
all of the earache releases he sold in norway (a ton) were not counted.
one has to think, perhaps this is for the best
metal came to the fore within a certain system
but why should we accept this system?
why should we accept dudes making metal a job
isn't it inevitable that they will succumb eventually artistically, even if they do make more money with earlier releases?
perhaps its alright for some bands
but maybe it should not be a culture, just something to think about
