Samurai and peasants used to get black out drunk on every religious or local holiday or important person's birthday just like in old Russia

when that ended, it just scaled up just like when Russians got distillation and foudn they had a massve drinking problem in the 1400-1500s

as getting drunk 2-3 times a month and having a few on sunday

became chug 2 liters of vodka and die i nthe snow

if you have jobs where you can't get fired if you show up, you get people who do nothing
