My predicted expenses for self-publishing at the most basic level should be 1) cover design 2) line-editing 3) formatting 4) advertising
but I think 4) is the only real essential thing there. self-pub authors vastly over think cover design
because they have infallibly bad taste

@diversity_is_racism I don't contest the importance of a well-designed and appealing cover. I just think that simplicity and good taste will win me the day over paying a designer to design me something like this

I've been paying a lot of attention to story writing and it seems like the background/universe of stories is either dollar store effort or so autistically fixated upon that they forget to write a story

their world building is either nonexistent to the point that it may as well just be tolkien fanfiction and at least admit it instead of trying to pretend to be original, or... you know
I don't really get the alternate worlds conceit
It made sense pre-tolkien when people went to Venus or Mars
and Tolkien himself basically just reimagined europe
Then spergs got a hold of the idea and started fetishizing it
