Because they are full grown adults who are encouraged to stay in a weird and incredibly annoying pupal stage of adolescence while simultaneously being told that each of them is incredibly brilliant and powerful and the "work" they're doing is critical to our national development, all so that universities can bilk the taxpayer for cash through federally guaranteed loans
at the very best, it's daycare
and one in one-thousand college kids uses the opportunity to do something interesting or useful

Those places still admit lots of smart kids
but also lots of fucking idiots. That's been my experience in top-10 law schools anyway
and those kids are even older than 4-year kids
but I can't speak to undergrads at top schools, I went to a mid range state school
