I got curious when I was looking into vocal anatomy and I thought "hey, based on what I'm reading shouldn't you be able to cut mass off here and here to make a higher pitched voice? wouldn't they call that something like 'vocal cord debulking?' " and I looked it up and it exists and is used for trannies

this is interesting because this approach is both less invasive and less permanent than what I envisioned when I asked myself, "how could medicine accomplish this?"

I have reason to suspect it's less convincing too, and I can hear it in the results

the problem with this is they basically stitch the extreme ends of the vocal folds together so only a shorter segment can ever even separate

when the real difference between lower and higher pitched vocal cords as I understand it is that the higher pitch is both a shorter cord but also a lighter cord as well

I would expect it to be sensible for them to shave off material from the non contact area of the vocal folds

apparently the way they actually do it is they don't shave the cords down, they stitch part of it together to raise the pitch
