The modern day city of Ibadan was founded in 1829 by Yoruba warriors as a war camp for the now weakened Oyo Empire (1300 -1835) and soon after the dissolution of the Oyo empire in 1835 and the destruction of it’s capital, (Old Oyo) by the Fulani muslims, sent many Yoruba regugees towards Ibadan, to which they continued to expand.
The Sokoto caliphate to the north was expaning and yet again was sending Yoruba refugees towards Ibadan, Ibadan seeing itself as the protecter of Yorubaland and it’s people, fought against the Sokoto caliphate and were able to halt their expansion into the Yorubaland. In the 1860’s there were many arguments amongst the Yoruba states of who were to become the political head of Yorubaland, since the Old Oyo empire fell just about 30 years ago, Ibadan wanted that position yet there was a new Oyo, Oyo Abita, which was like a continuation of the Oyo empire with a new Alaafin and all.
Ibadan, Ijaye and Oyo Abita all sought to become the new big political head of Yorubaland, to fill the void that the Oyo empire had left after it’s destruction.
Ijaye stood with Oyo Abita that because Oyo Abita was the “oldest” of these states, they should get all the tributes. Egba and Ijebu also stood with Ijaye.
When the Alaafin of Oyo Abita died, Ibadan wanted to have a successor to the throne be enthroned, yet Ijebu,Ijaye and Egba all disagreed as that would break the traditional way of enthroning a king. All these disputes led to the Ibadan Ijaye war in 1861, to which in the end, Ijaye’s towns and villages were razed to the ground by Ibadan, thus them winning the war in 1862.
It wouldn’t take long until 1877, Ibadan found itself in another war in Yorubaland against all the other Yoruba states. This war was called the Kiriji war because of the sound the cannons made. Ibadan was facing against a confederation of Yoruba states known as the Ekiti Parapo, which also yes, Included Ijaye, Egba and Ijebu.
Throughout the course of the war, the towns of Ijaye(again) and Osogun were completely wiped out, with Igbajo nearly surviving.
The War finally ended in 1893 when Ibadan was finally defeated.
