History:
The Soviet Union in the early- to mid-20th century was responsible for anywhere from 20 million to 60 million deaths (surely you learned about that in high school when you learned about Nazi Germany, right?)
5 or 6 million of those deaths were the kulaks.
Who were the kulaks? Well, in the mid-19th century, the Russian Empire abolished serfdom. The newly freed serfs joined the peasant class, where, naturally, some excelled a bit more than others.
Once it came time for the Glorious Era of Communist Perfection in the early 20th century, the state needed the kulaks' prosperous farms in order to collectivize and feed the masses. So what did they do?
Commie "intellectuals" began circulating to those who were less prosperous that the kulaks, why, they didn't earn those farms that they have!
Why should they have ten more cows and twenty more acres than you? They didn't acquire it fairly!
They are greedy robbers and thieves! They have more than you because they stole what rightfully belonged to other people!
Anything gained by them was gained at others' expense!
