"water absorbs heat from the sun causing ice caps to melt at a faster rate."
how would the sun cause the ice caps to melt at a faster rate when since about 1980, solar activity has been decreasing? solar activity is decreasing, but the earth's climate is increasing, so the heat from the sun is clearly not why the earth's climate is heating up

"As supplier of almost all the energy in Earth's climate, the sun has a strong influence on climate. A comparison of sun and climate over the past 1150 years found temperatures closely match solar activity (Usoskin 2005). However, after 1975, temperatures rose while solar activity showed little to no long-term trend. This led the study to conclude, *..during these last 30 years the solar total irradiance, solar UV irradiance and cosmic ray flux has not shown any significant secular trend, so that at least this most recent warming episode must have another source.*"

I thought that the ice caps melted because the heat from the sun is trapped by green house gases

2019-09-08 14:12:41 UTC

Am I wrong?

2019-09-08 15:52:26 UTC

Ice melts due to warm waters. Are being serious? Trapped heat by greenhouse gases would crack the entire polar regions apart, which really isn’t happening. Why do you think ice glaciers fall apart only near water? That’s exactly the point is to demonstrate that the water on our planet is absorbing the heat from the sun and causing ice to melt. The less white ice the less reflectivity it can emit back into space.

2019-09-08 15:54:35 UTC

Solar activity is decreasing because the sun goes into what we call “the solar cycle” but that doesn’t excuse the fact the there is a lot of water on our planet absorbing heat from the sun.

Climate change isn't real

2019-09-08 17:28:56 UTC

*the morons come out of the woodwork!*

2019-09-08 20:54:40 UTC

Can't we just use nuclear to fix it?

2019-09-08 20:55:26 UTC

Wind and solar are fucked

2019-09-08 20:56:32 UTC

They'll never be able to achieve the amount of power needed to supply a population that fossil fuels already have

I don't think wind and solar are "fucked" - but I agree that nuclear deserves far more attention

2019-09-08 22:56:28 UTC

So get reckt because sustainable energy can’t sustain itself in the long run lol. Get educated.

2019-09-08 22:58:18 UTC

if only we found perpetual energy

2019-09-08 22:58:29 UTC

that would be nice

2019-09-09 22:04:52 UTC

Lmao how is this even a debate

2019-09-10 01:47:45 UTC

it isnt

2019-09-10 01:47:58 UTC

the entire world has accepted the science

its literally just the republican party that has a problem with delusions

2019-09-10 06:59:27 UTC

I thought the argument was about whether humanity was behind global warming? @Green Syndicalism

2019-09-10 07:01:53 UTC

i think Silver is just referring to the name of the channel

2019-09-10 07:08:17 UTC

There is also an argument about the scope. The world ending in 12 years is ridiculous.

2019-09-10 07:08:33 UTC

Or is it 11 now? It has been a while since she said it.

2019-09-10 07:18:53 UTC

thats a pretty big strawman

2019-09-10 07:19:04 UTC

she was referring to the UN's report on climate change

2019-09-10 07:19:08 UTC

the literal gold standard

2019-09-10 07:19:29 UTC

which stated that "we only have until 2030 to enact policies to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees by 2050"

2019-09-10 07:32:52 UTC

Sounds pretty tame in comparison to
