@Puerto Rican Nelson Yeah the forms are a good foundation, especially for beginners - but after I got my black belt, I really just focused on sparring and the demonstration team (we'd do performances and stuff). If nothing else, memorizing so many moves just became tedious for me

I'd like to get into some kind of martial arts again in the future - I think I need to fight at least once a week, punching bag doesn't fully satisfy my soul lol

2020-02-14 07:27:28 UTC

I love the idea of boxing because my hands are my strongest point, whereas my kicking isn't as good (sad, for taekwondo lol)

2020-02-14 07:27:58 UTC

Same, could never do those wild spin kicks the third and fourth dans would. My build is better equipped for punching and bullying around the ring.

train wrestling and get into MMA

2020-02-14 07:28:28 UTC

group fighting is about 20x more enjoyable though

2020-02-14 07:28:32 UTC

yeah, I need a ground game bad

2020-02-14 07:28:33 UTC

I was going to say that grappling seems fairly important, and I don't have much of a background in that

2020-02-14 07:28:42 UTC

It's the most important thing

2020-02-14 07:28:48 UTC

no ground game = instant loss

2020-02-14 07:28:56 UTC

unless you break their jaw with ur first shot

2020-02-14 07:29:09 UTC

Watching a bit of MMA is what made me realize the importance of grappling

2020-02-14 07:29:26 UTC

Since those guys can hit too, but pretty much always seem to end up on the ground

2020-02-14 07:29:44 UTC

But watching street fights makes you think it's not as important all of the sudden lol

2020-02-14 07:29:50 UTC

Because shit lasts less than 10 seconds usually

2020-02-14 07:29:54 UTC

Before someone is KO

2020-02-14 07:29:57 UTC

my friend was a hs wrestling couch, so I'm not completely helpless. Kinda want to bridge it with judo, since throwing into pavement is quicker than getting a triangle choke.

2020-02-14 07:29:57 UTC

depends on the type of street fight

2020-02-14 07:30:05 UTC

if its two untrained randoms its just haymaker KOs

2020-02-14 07:30:37 UTC

Judo would be a good one to learn. And yeah, really depends on the opponents

2020-02-14 07:31:12 UTC

But definitely a weakness to work on, for me

2020-02-14 07:31:21 UTC

but it gets harder if they can actually fight

2020-02-14 07:31:32 UTC

since then they have taken heavy hits to the head before

2020-02-14 07:31:42 UTC

and they have better posture etc

2020-02-14 07:31:47 UTC

My master was definitely all about striking - which was what probably influenced me too

2020-02-14 07:31:55 UTC

judo is one of the few disciplines that has flashy shit that works.

2020-02-14 07:32:11 UTC

And to be fair, most people aren't recovering if you get a good solid hit on a weak spot like their face

2020-02-14 07:32:17 UTC

yup

2020-02-14 07:32:22 UTC

If you get one, you can get more - and so forth

2020-02-14 07:32:43 UTC

But you if encounter someone who has ground game, and can bully you to the ground and stop you for getting clean hits in

2020-02-14 07:33:10 UTC

Like, it FEELS improbable to me, but seeing it happen all the time in MMA made me afraid that it could happen to me too lol

2020-02-14 07:33:20 UTC

i'm headbutting and eye gouging at that stage lol

2020-02-14 07:33:35 UTC

Adrenaline can make you tank hits you shouldnt tank

2020-02-14 07:33:36 UTC

And squeezing the testicles, yes if need be

2020-02-14 07:33:49 UTC

and if you get someone on their back on the pavement

2020-02-14 07:33:57 UTC

and you have support

2020-02-14 07:33:58 UTC

well

2020-02-14 07:33:59 UTC

lol

2020-02-14 07:34:14 UTC

Pavement and walls (environment, in a nutshell) really changes things for sure

2020-02-14 07:34:26 UTC

Like, everything around you becomes a potential weapon at that point

2020-02-14 07:34:38 UTC

Very different from the sparring mindset with gear and a padded dojo
