some are all the way around, some guns are too short so they are only half way around inside the slide
they drop so it makes room
so they dont need 2 inches more of barrel and slide
and maintain overall barrel length
that way the slot the casing comes out is right above the mag
and not way forward

@a homo sapien - look for a club that does Practical Shotgun and while never in the same league as US black rifles there's tons of .22LR black rifles available now too. Both are good fun. If your club allows you can sill get various long barrel pistols from .22LR up to various centre fire cals.

And you can get 'straight pulls' but I've never seen the point in them tbh
like a lee enfield or mosin etc
