I would say that being born again doesn't require literal interpretation.
In the metaphorical sense, it would mean a drastic change in perception or mindset that changes a fundamental way a person behaves or believes.
I would consider the great awakening to be likened to being born again, just under different circumstances, not necessarily in a religious sense.
