Because masculinity in the cishetero context revolves both around the self-aggrandizement of one’s own masculine achievements and one’s ability to outperform other perceived men at the task of preforming masculinity. Gay men, especially effeminate gay men, are targeted by cishet guys for the same reason trans women in particular are targeted. They’re perceived as failures in the task of performing normative masculinity, and so they become easy targets for the bolstering of ones own masculinity
