The part to the side is indeed the magazine.

The optic looks fairly standard. Apparently it has a recoiling barrel to mitigate impulse.

Side note, for home defense; consider thick woody bushes with thorns at the base of your windows. They are easy to trim, are often VERY hardy, and are a surprisingly good deterrent so long as they're about 25 inches deep.
