@Khanclansith 1911 is a hella nice design. Why invest into R&D to try and surpass the literal Genius of firarms industry if you can simply copy it?
I bet financial reasoning was stronger than any other
@Uksio they made new designs with new ideas and materials, but they kept the ergos from the 1911
People loved 1911
Why even try to deviate from that?
I am not even mad for that copycat tendency. Copying is the biggest flattery, and John Browning would not mind anyway. He had so many more designs to care for such petty matters.
Kinda mind-boggling how prolific he was with crude hand-tools
No CAD, no CNC, no automated forges and foundries...
It continues today, how many pistols have "1911 style" Magazine releases. How many side arms are attempts to clone the sucess of the Glock.
Well, Browning shifted that mag release god-knows how many times in the prototyping and even after
All based on feedback of the shooters
If Browning did the polling and adjustments to suit 80% of the population, why would you bother placing it anywhere else?
There is a point in practical engineering where all designs start looking the same, because all of them converge on the best possible shape/functionality/ergonomics
Which is again mind-blowing that a SINGLE human managed to do this much R&D to actually hit the point of perfection (or at least get close to it)
Imagine if he had lived into WW2
Or had a son/apprentice who would continue his legacy
Whats his name did finish out the HP, but he just did that what with having to evacuate and all
Dieudonne Saive was Browning's assistant
He actually made the staggered magazine that worked
If you want to see our gun nerds in pain:

Which is surprisingly hard to do: if you read the history, there are very few successful magazine designs
Which is why changing the mag disigns is often a major thing
Hence why it is kind of a given that guns use established magazines from other models (like beretta or glock)
It was a surprise for me to learn that anyway
But apparently making a box with a spring to hold rounds is hard
I mean it all seems so stupidly simple, doesn't it?
And that is part of why "Gun people" freak out over "Common sense" magazine restrictions
Its not that simple as its about Angles and you have to be careful of cartdidges jamming up the mag
Apparently Val Allen Browning was working with Saive on that gun
Because you don't want to oil your magazine, would you?
Yeah, the way rounds are getting pushed up is not trivial. And exactly because magazines have so few parts there are no obvious solutions.
Either your geometry works or it's back to the drawing board, no quick fixes.
I mean, they get jossled by an explosion, shoved by recoil, bumped by bolt ... and they have to feed fast and precise despite all of those influences
Wich is why they started with integrated magazines
I can get surplus HK and Santa Barbara Magazines for my Rifle for about $5 a pop, to get 10 rounds they are like $30 plus and for hunting 5 round magazines I have to buy a new rifle. Not to mention the fact that I can clean and maintaine the military surplus 20 rounders no problem, I haven't been able to clean the 5 rounders
Could be intentional
Corporations are getting increasingly asshole about customer servicability
Wasn't there the Test with the cop and reloading?
More and more products are made to not be fixable/cleanable/servicable
Mostly so people would throw it away and buy a new one
It is more just the Laws at this point here.
I hate this trend, given that I can fix devices myself for the most part
