back when the nfa was being challenged in court it was argued that short barreled shotguns were not in military use so the nfa was constitutional
now NFA items are used by the military all the time
Literally the Mk18 and short-barreled M870s are perfect examples
about 75% of the Swiss military is Militia Regiments, every member has their complete kit including their STG in their home.
A TO&E for a militia member should include a Moderine intermediate carbine (AR-15/ AKpattern or simular) web gear to carry at least 6 magazines, and a stock of ammo for the magazines

the most insane part of the NFA has to be the shot barreled rifles/shotguns part especially considering you can have handguns just fine
a long barrel is not required for many guns, for home defense(one of the biggest points of the 2nd amendment right now) a shorter barrel is ideal
iirc the NFA was originally going to have pistols too, the goal was to make any easy to conceal weapons hard to get
and then you're allowed to just ignore the NFA when it comes to stuff like the c96 with a stock or the tankgewehr(destructive device)

The idea is that a "Handgun" as per the NFA is meant to be a one handed firearm for use in close for protection, a legitimate use. Things like the C96 where you stuck a stock on them meant they became Pistol Caliber Carbines... but all the oldies like the C96 are on the Except roster

i'm sure non sbrs are used for mass shootings because they're easier to buy, you could chop off the barrel but there's no real advantage to be had for doing that
plus there's the gas system and threaded barrel to worry about
The only SBRs used in crimes have been unregistered use by criminals who chopjobed them by themselves

and should actually be a good example of "stocks" not being an issue
I use a cane and the PDW Pistol Brace is useful to me to get more control for using the firearm as a pistol while I use the cane in the other hand
