@Crow 4chan has been around since email? And somehow I never knew about it until I came across Tim's YouTube.
It started in the early-mid 00s, so not email old but pretty old internet-wise. Based on an older Japanese site too
@possumsquat93 you must be very young then
right? 🤔
Nah, I'm ancient.
>4chan has been around since email?
No. Only since 2004
The ">" symbol itself has been around since basically forever, at least dating back to the 1600's as meaning "Greater Than"
In computing, > was first used to denote a quote in an email
Then futaba channel (Japanese 2chan, launched in 2001) used it the same way as email, but colored the quoted passage green for even greater clarity
From there, 4chan copied it along with everything else (4chan is/was a futaba-clone from the get-go, complete with formatting and visual style and all), and the concept evolved and spread to the rest of the internet. From a simple quote to the multitude of uses it has today
it's sort of obsolete on more modern forums, chatrooms and the like where you have inline quoting and whatnot or interact with just a few people almost face to face, so I'm not surprised someone younger hasn't encountered it before
Thanks. Yeah, "greater than" is the only meaning I associated with that symbol before today. Someone had mentioned the other meaning originated with 4chan, though, so I appreciate the clarification.
what are you people
You disgust me
YOU SICK FUCK
WHY WOULD YOU DRAW THAT
stop
YOU DEGENERATE PIECE OF SHIT
YOU ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH AMERICA
you are a madman
@possumsquat93 for westeners it originated in 4chan, for japanese in Futaba
it was used in email before, sure, but it was automaticly added when you were replying
I'm not sure it was used to quote specific parts of the previous emails
also, in email you would quote in relation to the email it was on, with multiple >>>
I would argue that the current use (in both yotsuba and futaba) is different
So can I shitpost gay shit?
i think that ship has already sailed
remember when being gay was unique?
