that's all that is

2018-10-14 20:51:53 UTC

But i didnt think it was called that

2018-10-14 20:52:07 UTC

It's entirely distinct from schizophrenia

2018-10-14 20:52:18 UTC

So... people who dont rehearse it mentally before speaking or something?

2018-10-14 20:52:28 UTC

cos if you're schizo, there's a second one that you don't control

2018-10-14 20:53:06 UTC

Dunno, never discussed it IRL

2018-10-14 20:53:17 UTC

nor am I aware of anyone who doesn't have it

2018-10-14 20:53:31 UTC

Maybe they do just not aware

2018-10-14 20:53:35 UTC

but apparently there's people that just don't think in words at all

2018-10-14 20:53:41 UTC

Like how your eyes automatically ignore your nose

2018-10-14 20:54:10 UTC

no they don't, I can see it

2018-10-14 20:54:45 UTC

you're just not looking at it in normal 'ahead' vision right?

2018-10-14 20:54:59 UTC

Its something you dont notice until someone points it out though

2018-10-14 20:56:35 UTC

I have aphantasia and I only found out a few years ago, which means it's basically impossible for me to visualize something, I think in words and concepts but can't think in images.

2018-10-14 20:56:56 UTC

I imagine it would be the same for someone who thinks in concepts and images but doesn't have an inner voice

2018-10-14 20:57:35 UTC

You still have image recognition though, right?

2018-10-14 20:57:49 UTC

Like, if you've seen something you can tell it apart from other stuff

2018-10-14 20:59:03 UTC

yeah, I can recognize people, places, etc. by their looks

2018-10-14 20:59:57 UTC

Right, that's similar for me I guess, I can describe what something looks like fine, even in detail, but if I try to visualize it it's all fuzzy and shit

2018-10-14 21:00:07 UTC

i recommend aydin paladin's vid on the subject and the actual findings of the NPC study
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lki2FlXX64
actual video starts at 12:20

2018-10-14 21:51:37 UTC

I read the study referenced and my understanding was that 17% of participants weren't thinking with an inner voice at the specific moments where they were asked to describe their thoughts, not necessarily that they never have an inner voice. I'm not a psychologist or anything though.

2018-10-14 21:56:00 UTC

the whole inner voice thing was considered in various ways and tim did that great vid about it, but more or less it's not quite voices in your head, it's your OWN voice in your head. It's the ability to stop and ask yourself things like, "gee, is hitting this random stranger over the head with a bike lock a good idea? y/n" before you just swing wildly and do it.

2018-10-14 22:02:47 UTC

The hard facts shift from study to study, you can get different results depending on how you ask the question and what situations you present. There are very clear situations where any normal person doesn't sit there and mentally talk something out because you recognize immediate action is a need.

If you want a good example of what NPCs really are: Watch any of Campus Reform's videos where they go out and poll university students about something that suddenly leaves all of them utterly stumped. They have no idea how to respond, so they give up on the actual question and start spitting out canned lines that sound like it supports their cause, without actually addressing the question.

That's the kind of thing that if they stopped for half a second and actually THOUGHT about it, rather than just their internal programming trying to pick a line at random, they would realize "wow... that does not apply to this situation, and I need to either really THINK for MYSELF, or admit I might be wrong."

2018-10-14 22:11:43 UTC

Here's a perfect example of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENN1eeyuLPY

All the NPCs went to this protest to get "Assault Weapons" banned, but their programmers forgot to explain to them what an "assault weapon" is.

2018-10-14 22:12:19 UTC

Yeah watching those videos made me think that the 17% number might be higher than the general population since all the subjects in the study were college students

2018-10-14 22:14:38 UTC

I saw what you did there 😏

Not sure I agree with all those bingo squares. I know I only watched Black Panther just to see how bad it was, and even had a 'polite discussion' with someone here where I explained how they're a bunch of black fascists. The NPC of course, disagreed with me.
The rest are largely in line with what makes an NPC.

2018-10-14 22:51:31 UTC

Hmmm

2018-10-14 22:51:35 UTC

if you mean the "unhealth obsession with major cinematic-- etc"

2018-10-14 22:51:41 UTC

top right corner

2018-10-14 22:51:49 UTC

watching just Black Panther is not an obsession

2018-10-14 22:51:54 UTC

ahhhh

2018-10-14 22:52:07 UTC

you are right

2018-10-14 22:52:08 UTC

no, i agree with the obsession one.

2018-10-14 22:52:12 UTC

but that one I give fault to.

2018-10-14 22:53:36 UTC

needs to be replaced with something like "Thinks Wakanda is a Utopian Society the rest of the world should strive to be." or somesuch nonsense.

2018-10-14 22:54:04 UTC

since it's still aiming at the MCU

2018-10-14 22:55:03 UTC

I'd give another reference, but those movies are such idle popcorn flicks, I scarcely remember anything of note about them. I could recap their stories and scenes, but... like... they're nothing outstanding.

2018-10-14 22:55:57 UTC

I think that slot was just a bit generic, super hero movies became more of the same
