Leaving will just make the situation worse because Italian debt is issued in Euros and or dollars
Which would make it hard for Italy to pay with a weak currency should they leave
They would have to default because in that case there is no way they'll get access to the ESM, bailouts from other European states or debt forgiveness
There would simply be no incentive to not let Italy just die
Austerity is bad of course because they can't expect to just lend more money ad infinitum
This doesn't fly within or without the EU
I support debt forgiveness provided after the crisis countries behave responsibly regarding budgets
It's honestly a pain to have 20 something budgets and one currency and would be much easier to handle if there was one budget. Of course a pretty bad outcome for wealthier states like Germany which would have to pay for more backwards countries
But it would force everyone to economically and fiscally pull in the same direction
