Libertarians will throw a fit about fiat currency not being real money but it's infinitely better than tying a currency to something like gold

2020-03-14 13:50:18 UTC

Especially now when gold has industrial uses etc. and fluctuates wildly in value

2020-03-14 13:53:38 UTC

is the amount of gold that is circulating a problem for tying currency to it, as in we are trading much more value than all the gold has overall and money is just the tool to trade value?

2020-03-14 13:55:04 UTC

The issue is that you cannot control the gold supply/value so one year when you strike gold your currency massively lose value and other times demand for gold will make it more expensive causing deflation

2020-03-14 13:55:40 UTC

Fiat currency is nice in that you can consistently set the rate of inflation at say 2% per annum

2020-03-14 13:56:39 UTC

Going back to the gold standard now would be even worse than in the past though because gold isn't jsut some valuable thing

2020-03-14 13:56:48 UTC

There's industrial uses for it etc.

2020-03-14 13:57:13 UTC

And don't get me started on what'll happen if we start mining gold from asteroids

2020-03-14 13:57:23 UTC

is it correct that states literally print money to pay their bills which drives inflation?

2020-03-14 13:58:26 UTC

No. States have central banks which print money and lend it to banks or the government

2020-03-14 13:58:40 UTC

The ECB is basically one central bank for the Eurozone

2020-03-14 13:59:16 UTC

Ideally we would actually print the money to pay our bills though (keeping the 2% inflation target in mind)

2020-03-14 14:00:40 UTC

why does the ecb print money

2020-03-14 14:01:08 UTC

Because we needed a single central bank because of the Euro

2020-03-14 14:01:14 UTC

So we created that one

2020-03-14 14:01:27 UTC

It operates exactly how the old central banks used to

2020-03-14 14:02:36 UTC

But the concept of central banks is actually ridiculous. It's just asserted governments can't be trusted with printing their own currency so a private unaccountable institution has to

2020-03-14 14:03:03 UTC

Then that private institution gets to lend it to banks instead of idk financing the government's budget

2020-03-14 14:03:54 UTC

It's honestly ridiculous that EU member states have to argue about paying membership fees when you could jsut abolish the ECB and take their printed money

2020-03-14 14:05:30 UTC

hmkay

2020-03-14 15:41:56 UTC
