Libertarians will throw a fit about fiat currency not being real money but it's infinitely better than tying a currency to something like gold

Especially now when gold has industrial uses etc. and fluctuates wildly in value

is the amount of gold that is circulating a problem for tying currency to it, as in we are trading much more value than all the gold has overall and money is just the tool to trade value?

The issue is that you cannot control the gold supply/value so one year when you strike gold your currency massively lose value and other times demand for gold will make it more expensive causing deflation

Fiat currency is nice in that you can consistently set the rate of inflation at say 2% per annum

Going back to the gold standard now would be even worse than in the past though because gold isn't jsut some valuable thing

There's industrial uses for it etc.

And don't get me started on what'll happen if we start mining gold from asteroids

No. States have central banks which print money and lend it to banks or the government

The ECB is basically one central bank for the Eurozone

Ideally we would actually print the money to pay our bills though (keeping the 2% inflation target in mind)

It's honestly ridiculous that EU member states have to argue about paying membership fees when you could jsut abolish the ECB and take their printed money
