Thats right. The primary meanings of 日本 is literally origin of the sun

so together it basically means they come from the sun which is what they believe in their myths

with their deity being the sun god

In English this gets turned into "land of the rising sun" which is actually pretty accurate to how the Japanese use it in old literature
