As smart as he was. He preferred paying off or simply aquesing to other countries. Taking no risks and just wanted to not piss anyone off.

Whether or not it was due to him not wanting to take risks or that he had ulteriror motives? Not for me to judge

from obama back to ford i think it would have not gone well. the usa is on the cusp of a new political philosophy so long as it doesent get squashed before it matures

the space thing doesent make sense to me, the only thing i can think of is he see's it both as a resource and a vulneribility if anyone else on the world beats us to it

You can be the tyrant under your own rules, or a pawn under another

as a resource were not as close to where many people think we need to be in order to exploit it, theres dreamers out there for sure who are thinking of ways to use the moon or mars but its still the most expensive thing to do

as a vulneribility sure

Still though, two things can happen of this

People flock to the US govt to offer their skills with aeronautics and spacecraft.

Or other countries start working on space tech

It will take decades before it gets anywhere

though i think if we concentrated on the ground we could make leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else who concentrates on space (because face it there arnt many countrys with the economy that can put as much forward as we can into that) and then if we were ever vulnerible to space we would be more than formitible enough on the earth to counter that

But a force not tied to earth? That will be a threat then

Imagine a colony going rogue and sending an invasion force to earth

i supose what might be nice is anti-icbm satalites if it turns out that would be more cost effective than ground defenses

But Id imagine thats the first hurdle

wouldent need it, it would only need a reserve to draw on the moment the weapon needs to be used basicly like a gun with ammo, it would be expensive to reload but it would be more cost effective than creating the solar power nessicary to create such a defense consitering the bigger the thing you make in space the more damage it takes over time
