When you use it in a manner to try and reconcile the current scientific theory of billions of years, you’re using the verse wrong. Whenever you see evidence that supposedly disproves the Bible, take the evidence and view it through the Bible. Don’t take the evidence and try to make the Bible fit the evidence you find.

Another verse that gets used to reconcile billions of years is Genesis 1:1-2. People try to insert a gap there. Putting a gap there doesn’t really make sense, and there isn’t a Biblical reason to do so either.
