or are the blue headed dinguses only operating in "safe" zones?
They switched to white helmets from what I understand
Correct, the peacekeepers only operate when hostilities have ceased. Ideally.
They must come from a neutral country not party to whatever conflict.
Basically they just guard the buffer zone between two belligerents at the end of war
But depending on where it is, it can still be dangerous. Peacekeepers are forbidden from carrying most offensive weapons. Sniper rifles etc.
They are not necessarily bad, or a bad idea, but there have been a lot of problems with certain nationalities
They are NOT a standing army in themselves. They are national troops from everywhere. US, UK, France, Russia, Germany, China, and so on. 76 Americans have died on UN missions
105 British, nine Koreans, 51 Russians, 122 Canadians, 18 Chinese, etc
But the UN will pay their government a stipend per soldier for the mission. I don't know what it is, I think it's around $1,200 but I can't remember for sure.
Pays the government, not the soldier. And that's where Africa comes in. A shitload of African countries will loan troops to the UN, to make a lot of money off them.
Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Rwanda, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Egypt, Indonesia, Tanzania, and Ghana are the top contributors
China is 11th, Italy is 22nd, Mongolia is 27th, Germany is 28th, France is 33rd, UK is 34th, etc. Everything in between is mostly shitholes
It costs very little to make a soldier in Ethiopia or Senegal, and they are paid very little. But the government can make a lot.
So of the 8,508 Ethiopian soldiers on loan, that's a profit of over $10 million per month
And that accounts for more than 1 in 50 soldiers
Ethiopia is far more of a shithole than any meme can illustrate. Like 2/3 of the country's marriages are by abduction, and journalists who criticize the government have been charged not only with treason but also genocide. Machinegunning down protestors is not unheard of.
That conduct is the norm, not the exception. Corruption etc. You become an army officer by having connections and bribery.
And when you have nearly ten thousand of them as peacekeepers, there will be abuses
You don't usually have those issues with American, French, British, German, Russian, Korean, Chinese etc peacekeepers.
The Korean War wasn't the fault of the UN. There was no UN Army there. There was the Korean Army, the US Army, the British Army, etc etc etc. This was before the General Assembly ran everything
Had the Chinese not shown up, there would be a united Korea today
China sent over four times as many soldiers as NK and Russia combined
The majority of the KPA were killed, as low as 1 in 5 actually survived the war. Chinese Volunteer Army was like "only" 6 out of 7 survived. I wouldn't call that a win.
South Korea lost about 1 in 5 and we lost about 1 in 10.
So if you ask me, nobody won. I'm sure all those dead guys on both sides would agree.
Ouch, hits too hard to home.
Where from?
Throwback to when the French were the best shitposters in the world
