It's more of a logic argument. Ok, so it's a proven historical fact that Mao Zedong was a pedophile and mass murderer. But they could argue that as the failings of a man, not of an idea. And his successor Deng Xiaoping is a bit of evidence in favor of that.
In theory communism could be implemented without atrocity. In practice it cannot.
You would need everyone to be willing to surrender their personal property peacefully
That means the humble farm your family inherited from your grandfather, that three generations of your family have lived on and worked the land, you would have to be willing to give that up without hesitation

The only time it can work is in a country where there's two people, and both are communists to the core.
Healthcare etc is all incidental. Healthcare in China is not free, and taxes are brutal. Healthcare and even housing is free in North Korea, which also has no taxes.
But neither have anything remotely resembling gay rights. Gays are trash to the Chinese, and North Koreans don't even know such a thing as homosexuality exists.
