The HK protest is because they want to be a safe haven for criminals, sparked by an HKer who killed his pregnant girlfriend in Taiwan. They didn't want an extradition law, like the rest of the world already has. Hypothetically, anyone with visa-free entry to HK (including Americans) could kill 50 people here, board a plane before anyone knows about it, and go to HK where they will never be extradited.
The protestors are throwing Molotov cocktails at police; to work for HKPF you must be fluent in English and Cantonese, which rules out most mainlanders; and you must hold an HK residency permit for seven years. The vast majority if not all of them are lifelong HKers themselves, the protestors are attacking their own neighbors who live under the same conditions as them. They are also destroying private property, cars, the airport, etc.
The story about HKers singing Christian hymns recently is either bullshit or attention-whoring. Only 5% of HK is Christian.
HK has never been a democracy. Under British rule, the monarch chose a Governor-General who appointed the HK colonial government. The people had absolutely no say in it whatsoever. There was no vote. Now, under Chinese rule, they can vote, but cannot have a independence/separatist candidate. They have the most free economy in the world, even more than the US. They also have uncensored media, internet etc unlike the mainland. Hell, even Britain is more of a dictatorship than HK (more than the mainland in fact).
