but its not the whole thing

2018-12-05 19:47:03 UTC

That wasn't a moral argument, it was an economic theory argument.

2018-12-05 19:47:17 UTC

both are valid

2018-12-05 19:47:47 UTC

I you want to help China refer back to the industrial revolution

2018-12-05 19:50:49 UTC

The only one making a moral argument is Beemann, in the bizarre claim that the poor Chinese people for some reason won't figure out what to do with themselves if their export sector shrinks.

2018-12-05 19:51:28 UTC

I just want to trade with China if they can trade fairly. I have nothing against the Chinese people either, and view nobody above another. But if China cant help themselves to not steal IP, or for unfair business practices. I think it best we increase tariffs at the expense of lower profits to fix the systemic issue. And I think the EU needs to pick anything to do

2018-12-05 19:52:00 UTC

>the only one making a moral argument is Beemann
M1 made it initially, with the slavery comment

2018-12-05 19:52:13 UTC

And then said it's still valid lol

2018-12-05 19:52:18 UTC

Gaslight harder

2018-12-05 19:52:31 UTC

I would also consider Democrats in favor of slavery

2018-12-05 19:52:34 UTC

@m1 By what standard is it moral to trade with the US or wherever you live

2018-12-05 19:52:38 UTC

by importing the whole of S. America

2018-12-05 19:52:40 UTC

Beemann, why would you think it's okay to move production from the US to China but not to move production back from China to the US?

2018-12-05 19:52:46 UTC

and using them as second class citizens

2018-12-05 19:53:00 UTC

When did I ever state that was my position?

2018-12-05 19:53:04 UTC

You're dichotomizing

2018-12-05 19:53:49 UTC

So should we not offshore American jobs because it would leave American workers with 0 jobs?

2018-12-05 19:55:49 UTC

It's not a collective decision to offshore or not

2018-12-05 19:56:07 UTC

It's a trade policy decision.

2018-12-05 19:56:57 UTC

It's actually one of domestic costs

2018-12-05 19:57:23 UTC

And that cost environment is determined by trade policy.

2018-12-05 19:58:42 UTC

If by trade policy you mean every policy that potentially affects a business, sure, but I think you mean international trade, of which only part of it is relevant to what the government should be doing here

2018-12-05 19:59:17 UTC

And that part is not a wholesale solution to the issue either

2018-12-05 19:59:56 UTC

increased tariffs on Chinese goods = Higher costs of those goods making other countries more attractive for manufacturing

2018-12-05 20:00:26 UTC

so higher cost enviroment as determined by trade policy

2018-12-05 20:00:46 UTC

m1's got it.

2018-12-05 20:01:32 UTC

Right. Which means you're fucking yourself short term and long term, because you aren't looking at why you weren't competitive to start with lol

2018-12-05 20:02:21 UTC

1. Cost of products goes way up, increasing costs on the poor in your country
2. Your country continues to pursue noncompetitive policy, because you're now just deciding to tariff your way out of the hole

2018-12-05 20:02:46 UTC

We already know why we're not competitive on a pure cost basis with shit-poor countries with shitty economic regulations.

2018-12-05 20:02:59 UTC

What do you do if/when automation does the same thing? Ban robots?

2018-12-05 20:03:13 UTC

Swap to a monetary redistribution system?

2018-12-05 20:03:35 UTC

The cost of merely doing business in the US drives companies out regardless

2018-12-05 20:03:36 UTC

When automation does it I'll retire.

2018-12-05 20:03:38 UTC

prolly not use generalizations to prove a point

2018-12-05 20:04:05 UTC

in the old days in the US

2018-12-05 20:04:09 UTC

people would attack trains

2018-12-05 20:04:19 UTC

because they would replace the carriage drivers

2018-12-05 20:04:26 UTC

So hold on

2018-12-05 20:04:30 UTC

your point is along those lines

2018-12-05 20:04:35 UTC

If we don't need those jobs, why is it bad that China has them?

2018-12-05 20:05:20 UTC

Your argument was that we should bring those jobs in country, rather than outsourcing
