ah

2019-01-02 21:12:53 UTC

Identity is important because it allows people to say that they are part of something

2019-01-02 21:13:19 UTC

For example, as an american I can do pretty much whatever I want and be considered an american

2019-01-02 21:13:52 UTC

identity is not necessarily important, it's just a trick that holds over from days when group thinking was much more valuable to the survival of the species

2019-01-02 21:14:00 UTC

Because america is thought of as a melting pot theres virtually no issue with me considering myself an american

2019-01-02 21:14:29 UTC

ummm

2019-01-02 21:14:50 UTC

personal identity is important, but identifying with others helps you interact in the society without having to personally negotiate and decide every interaction based on your personal identity

2019-01-02 21:14:53 UTC

If you go to a more restrictive country like say, saudi arabia it would be much harder to belong to that group

2019-01-02 21:14:53 UTC

it's a shorthand

2019-01-02 21:15:40 UTC

And if you dont think you belong to a group you are much more likely to be ok with actions against it

2019-01-02 21:16:28 UTC

identity is not self-given
it is a higher concept to which people adhere
and it is not associating that gives you an identity
but acting / being based on that higher concept

2019-01-02 21:16:55 UTC

If you dont consider yourself a black person you might be much more apathetic to anti black propganda

2019-01-02 21:16:55 UTC

not necessarily

2019-01-02 21:17:10 UTC

identity refers to multiple things

2019-01-02 21:18:01 UTC

a higher concept may be the determining factor in identity, but to value that higher concept is self-determined

2019-01-02 21:19:57 UTC

so whether or not we value identity is self-determined?
i agree.

2019-01-02 21:20:23 UTC

no, what we identify as or identify with is self determined

2019-01-02 21:20:49 UTC

Identity as a concept is inherently valuable

2019-01-02 21:20:58 UTC

that's why delusions exist, when a person has determined an identity that is incongruous with reality

2019-01-02 21:21:07 UTC

It gives a person a sense of belonging and a higher purpose

2019-01-02 21:21:24 UTC

@GoldenPhoenix, yes by definition

2019-01-02 21:21:37 UTC

But as pheonix says, what groups you belong to and consider yourself to be are determined by you

2019-01-02 21:22:20 UTC

It is also within your power to alter the definitions of groups to include yourself, though this may not be accepted by other members of that identity

2019-01-02 21:22:38 UTC

so identity as a concept, while valuable to an individual, are not necessary in the strictest sense. they act as a summary of your personal beliefs about the universe and allow you to speed up your interactions, but that's not always required

2019-01-02 21:23:19 UTC

for example, I identify as a libertarian, but that identity is not definitive to who I am as a whole, and I could just as easily state my exact beliefs rather than that shorthand

2019-01-02 21:23:52 UTC

ummmm
okay
but can you give a concise answer to my question then?

2019-01-02 21:24:46 UTC

no, because the question of "is identity vital to all societies?" is very nuanced and dependent on definitions and factors. the shortest answer is "it depends"

2019-01-02 21:26:07 UTC

if you cant, why did you attempt it?

2019-01-02 21:26:54 UTC

because it's an important discussion that could possibly be reasoned out with discussion, and sometimes the attempt is more important than the answer

2019-01-02 21:27:03 UTC

yo,
while i, and i hope most of you,
condemn identity politics,
i would say identity is still
vital to any and all societies.
I am not politically apt,
so please, if any of you are,
give an opinion I can comprehend.

2019-01-02 22:05:51 UTC

fine

2019-01-02 22:21:23 UTC

Identity politics is, ironically, the polar opposite of personal identity.

2019-01-02 22:21:43 UTC

politics =/= identity

2019-01-02 22:23:20 UTC

I would also not agree that identity is important to a society, in fact it should not be at all considered on any legislative, executive or judicial level.

2019-01-02 22:23:58 UTC

I think it's important to distinguish that society =/= government

2019-01-02 22:24:04 UTC

it is not important because... ?

2019-01-02 22:24:28 UTC

It is important to the individual itself.

2019-01-02 22:24:52 UTC

how are they exclusive?

2019-01-02 22:25:04 UTC

But your identity is not important to me, just like my identity is not important to you.

2019-01-02 22:25:12 UTC

and why is that?

2019-01-02 22:25:37 UTC

it is important to individuals, and individuals make up society, but society as a collective group shouldn't place extra value on identity
