I read a nice bog post once. Argued the fastest way for the right to shut down all the campus shout downs would be for every right-leaning group to gang up and get a list of left-leaning speakers on campus and then just disrupt it with chants of "This is what you do to us!" whenever given the chance.

It gets worse. I suspect most of them can't empathize or understand their enemies. But their enemies understand them.

That's a natural situation for infiltration.

There's a saying: "The Right sees the Left as Wrong; the Left sees the Right as Evil"

It's morally repugnant for a lot of them to identify with their opponents.

More importantly, it makes it plausible to create a shibboleth.

But here's the idea. Suppose you find a person and want to know where they stand.

if you are deemed impure, you're out

and doubt is all you need to become impure

You start with something small and subtle and work on down and see where you get pushback.

And then eventually you ask if the person you're talking to can summarize without prejudice the opinions of X. Where X is some fairly mainstream right-of-center character.

If they start characterizing them as moral evil...
