people get the most defensive when you imply they are wrong or try to convince them of your side, but if you ask questions and get them to explain their belief, then explain your own without trying to undermine their position you can have a very effective dialectic.

People have been petty and politically violent since the dawn of man. The difference now is that society is very dependent on electronic communications, and due to convenience, society allowed the vast majority of it into the hands of a few thousand people in San Fran.

A big part of the issue is that even a lot of conservatives are irrationally hostile when conversing with liberals.
