Saying that Nationalism has historically united people against invaders is very dishonest. Nationalism is a product of the French Revolution, I will agree that it united the revolutionaries to fight against what they felt were tyrants trying to take. However it also caused a bloody civil war in France because it enforced homogenization of the historical provinces of France. Or the retardation that was Hungarian nationalism that tried to magyarize the other ethnic groups, despite only 40% of the country population was Hungarian.

Nationalism is only part of our modern nation-states, problem is, the state and nation is defined by the very few, not the people themselves. Nationalist might screech about foreigners in their country and make fun of liberals, yet they are oblivious to the fact nationalism is closely intervened with liberalism and the way liberalism has evolved has also shaped the nation-state with it ideals of tolerance and multi-culturalism.

It is actually pretty funny to think about. How nationalism and the birth of democratic nation-states where the nation could now rule themselves and people could take part in the new sovereign state by the democratic process. But now this state has failed and need to integrate and assimilate other groups to either become a multi-cultural society or create a new nation with the new inhabitants.

From "liberating" themselves from multi-national empires to later become a nation state and to our modern time were said nation state is destroying the nation they swore to protect, said nation that ironically was more free under the historical empire.

Nationalism is a direct consequent of the ideas of liberalism of self-determination and equality before the laws. Why you may ask? Because for a people to be able to take part in the political process, they have to speak the same language and act through the definition laid down by the elite, and as you can see, taking part in the political process through democracy made the people feel responsible for their nation, to not forget education that enforced the history of said nation. However this supposed nation is completely different from the one of the Ancien Régime.

No nationalism is not organic or natural at all, it is an synthetic in that it was created by the state or institutions based on a supposed "social contract" as opposed to the natural evolution of social bonds.
