Even with birdshot, the recoil is still roughly the same because it is all about total weight of what is in the shell and powder load. Most shells have somewhere around 1 oz of shot. Where target loaded 12 ga still have a good enough kick that one handing a 12ga that doesn't have a pistol grip is very likely to just fly out of your hand or at least cause you to flinch is all.
