Just read up on Islam and the Qua'ran. The more you know, the more you can understand China.

Christians often distance themselves from the bad/violent parts of the Bible for example.
Because every Christian interprets the bible in its own way and nobody takes it literally.
So yeah, you have to take a look at the Religion and judge it by what it does to the people!
And not all religions are equal. Some are good, some are not.
And yes, christian beliefs are often abused and misused by the preachers for personal benefits (Power or Money)....

The Problem often times doesn't lie in the Religion, its in the Institutions.
And the Problems we have right now with the political divide wouldn't be happening if we still had a unifying religion.
And that is the job of the Religion: Unify the people and keep the beast in man in check.
The Problem is that most people can't live without religion. If they "don't learn" Religion (=Christianity or something else), their brain looks for other ways to worship.
