@Mr. Nessel I expect that Germany would be one of the last to flip to a more populist right government, so before that they would probably pull the plug on the EU themselves rather than see it taken over by countries broadly in line with the Visegrad group.

If you've seen his recent talk with Justin Murphy, you'll see that he has always associated himself more with the people and aesthetics of progressivism (he never really denied that as I recall, and was generally quite forward about it), but his ideas are generally quite useful regardless.

If he does give them up down the line, it would do a lot to strengthen the position of autoritarianism, by poking holes in the narrative that power gained will never be returned

In the short term, short stints of executive power which are later returned are a much better way to acclimatise otherwise republican-minded populations

They sort of are building a rival project, in the Three Seas Initiative, that's a complicated picture though.
