What are your thoughts on universal basic income?

2017-09-20 17:39:32 UTC [/leftypol/ International #english]

It provides essential things that other programs like healthcare, education, etc cannot

2017-09-20 17:40:05 UTC [/leftypol/ International #english]

Like political power, innovative potential, and personal freedom

2017-09-20 17:40:36 UTC [/leftypol/ International #english]

It's also a great way to fill the gaps between other programs

Workers won't really have power pretty soon, people really underestimate the pace things are moving and the impact technology is having

I'm a founder of https://basicincomeamerica.org/, a new organization pushing for a progressive universal basic income in the US.
Ask me anything about universal basic income.

Basic income has supporters from a wide range of political identities.

2017-09-26 20:57:26 UTC [/leftypol/ International #english]

But it's important to understand that not everyone is advocating for the same thing.

We specifically say progressive BI because we want it to be funded by more taxes, not slashing benefits such as healthcare which we also need.

Automation will make universal basic income essential

Major unemployment will start in around 4 years

@Deleted User Automation is why we need UBI

@Deleted User It will not. Overpopulation will never be a problem for our species. As standards of living rise people have less kids.

@Deleted User There is phenomenon in Africa where people with high standards of living are having more kids than those with low standards of living?

@Deleted User You sure are quite the racist, huh? What you have provided is not an example of people with high standards of living having more kids, it is an example of people with low standards of living having more kids.

@Deleted User Yes that was my point to begin with. When standards of living rise, reproduction falls. Are you now agreeing with me?

Yes

@Deleted User So then it follows that overpopulation would not be a problem with basic income, instead if anything it would reduce the problem.

@Deleted User How about we use data from this century instead?

@Deleted User We are looking at the behavior of people in modern times with modern living standards. Can you name a single country where there is an exception to the rule that higher standards of living = less kids?

@Deleted User Give me the data

Okay, and standard of living data?
