"If nobody can agree on it it's not much of anything"

2018-06-14 04:50:22 UTC

Thanks

2018-06-14 04:50:37 UTC

Ok, not EVERYONE has to agree on EVERYTHING

2018-06-14 04:50:49 UTC

Just like 40% or something in the double digits at least

2018-06-14 04:50:56 UTC

why?

2018-06-14 04:51:26 UTC

Because if less people agree the religion should be split up until more people agree in various divisions

2018-06-14 04:51:27 UTC

there are levels of understanding though

2018-06-14 04:51:35 UTC

Then those are better religions for those people

2018-06-14 04:51:54 UTC

Ok, not "better"

2018-06-14 04:51:57 UTC

I don't think religion is about agreeing with people though

2018-06-14 04:52:02 UTC

More representative of how they feel

2018-06-14 04:52:08 UTC

And who they are and all that

2018-06-14 04:52:18 UTC

I think religion is a personal thing

2018-06-14 04:52:30 UTC

sure there is a community aspect to it

2018-06-14 04:52:42 UTC

But if it's not a relatively cohesive thing then there's no point defining it as a religion, because it's so loose

2018-06-14 04:53:04 UTC

it's about how an individual should get along in the world

2018-06-14 04:53:30 UTC

For me it's "religion" representing the community aspect and "belief" or whatever else representing individual opinions and thoughts

2018-06-14 04:53:56 UTC

i see

2018-06-14 04:53:59 UTC

So having some sort of cohesiveness is important for the community aspect

2018-06-14 04:54:26 UTC

Basically if there were one Christian left in the world, it would be pointless to call him a Christian

2018-06-14 04:55:38 UTC

For me the more a person strays from the orthodox of whatever subgroup they're in the less they are representative of that group

2018-06-14 04:55:49 UTC

you can call yourself whatever you want, but if you stray that far from the teachings then why call yourself that at all? lol

2018-06-14 04:55:57 UTC

Exactly

2018-06-14 04:56:28 UTC

also I think there are levels of religiousness

2018-06-14 04:56:35 UTC

that is important to note i think

2018-06-14 04:57:04 UTC

it makes it harder to define unfortunately

2018-06-14 04:57:14 UTC

For me it's how strongly you believe in whatever is being discussed

2018-06-14 04:58:14 UTC

If you're willing to debate reasonably but are defensive that's about average, if you border on burning heretics that's a pretty strong belief, if you bend over backwards to help others violate your beliefs you don't really believe those things

2018-06-14 04:58:53 UTC

you can have strong beliefs and not want to hurt anyone too

2018-06-14 04:59:20 UTC

So I don't consider churches that have a gay pride flag to have strong christian beliefs (as laid out in the bible)

2018-06-14 04:59:36 UTC

Yeah, it's just an example

2018-06-14 04:59:36 UTC

right

2018-06-14 04:59:43 UTC

gotcha

2018-06-14 04:59:56 UTC

@M4Gunner I never hear that said though

2018-06-14 05:00:02 UTC

That's totally glossed over

2018-06-14 05:00:20 UTC

It's like American Protestants have no concept of what sin even is

2018-06-14 05:01:00 UTC

It's all morality with them; "It's immoral to be cruel to others, the moral thing to do... morality is a cornerstone of our society"

2018-06-14 05:01:41 UTC

@M4Gunner I view it as a political statement, but I'd be willing to no immediately mock a church if I had an inkling it was purely religious

2018-06-14 05:01:50 UTC

Absolutely

2018-06-14 05:02:01 UTC

It's like relying on a calculator

2018-06-14 05:02:17 UTC

Great crutch, totally functional, but when you leave it at home you're fucked

2018-06-14 05:02:53 UTC

I think that certain religious ideas are based on real observations

2018-06-14 05:03:03 UTC

Those are the best ones

2018-06-14 05:04:52 UTC

and this stuff was written a long time ago, and they used the symbolism and old style language, so i think it's really important to study it hard if you are serious about it. people who saw a cartoon vhs of noahs ark, and nothing else, isnt a good representation of the essence of the teaching

2018-06-14 05:04:58 UTC

The thing with religions. The only ones that survibe take from their prior types. So the *morality would die when you lose your religion* is a falsity

2018-06-14 05:05:33 UTC

And since the western world laws are written based off this. Even the athiestic are forced to observe said morality

2018-06-14 05:05:41 UTC

@Deleted User I'm totally fine with symbolism and shit, working the brain is good

2018-06-14 05:06:02 UTC

Religion has always been about explaining the unexplained

2018-06-14 05:06:07 UTC

also if they are based in true observations, those teachings would reemerge @Goblin_Slayer_Floki

2018-06-14 05:06:17 UTC

I have no respect for generic american Protestantism, though. More of a lack of belief than actual belief

2018-06-14 05:06:36 UTC

It gives humans a teather to keep from fearing everything

2018-06-14 05:06:39 UTC

"We should all be nice to each other" is not an impressive or insightful revelation

2018-06-14 05:06:53 UTC

it was at one point

2018-06-14 05:06:59 UTC

we take it for granted now

2018-06-14 05:07:05 UTC

true ^

2018-06-14 05:07:09 UTC

@banestrum but before it the world was far more chaotic

2018-06-14 05:07:15 UTC

It was annoying even back in the 1800s, but at least it seemed to be legitimate belief

2018-06-14 05:07:32 UTC

eye for an eye used to be great too

2018-06-14 05:07:41 UTC

@Goblin_Slayer_Floki And now we drown in our own human excess, what an improvement

2018-06-14 05:07:58 UTC

Because most of the moralities have been abandoned

2018-06-14 05:08:03 UTC

no

2018-06-14 05:08:07 UTC

before it was eye for **YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY**

2018-06-14 05:08:09 UTC

avoiding excess was one of those

2018-06-14 05:08:22 UTC

The adherence to them is more slavish than ever but the understanding is minimal

2018-06-14 05:08:38 UTC

@M4Gunner easy to be a glutton, to easy

2018-06-14 05:08:42 UTC

It's like giving an autist a gun and a badge and telling him to enforce curfew

2018-06-14 05:08:48 UTC

You KNOW he's going to shoot someone

2018-06-14 05:09:04 UTC

I want the hard route

2018-06-14 05:09:08 UTC

ain't that the truth

2018-06-14 05:09:16 UTC

Give me the suffering

2018-06-14 05:09:45 UTC

I guess it's hard to go through life believing nothing

2018-06-14 05:10:32 UTC

I'm not religious or anything, but it seems like lying to yourself to just hope for the best and smile all the time

2018-06-14 05:10:39 UTC

Also stupid

2018-06-14 05:10:43 UTC

Thats why even those who abandon faith replace it with faith in something else

2018-06-14 05:11:05 UTC

Yeah, but faith in nothing is fucking dumb

2018-06-14 05:11:18 UTC

Or something so ephemeral that it might as well be swamp gas

2018-06-14 05:11:22 UTC

Yes but blind faith in humans is also dumb

2018-06-14 05:11:39 UTC

Being nice to people is not a religion, no matter how much we dress it up

2018-06-14 05:11:40 UTC

oh dear God, please purge the cancer

2018-06-14 05:12:04 UTC

Humans are fallable. Such is the world.

2018-06-14 05:12:07 UTC

Then get the bible belt off their asses and burn these heretics

2018-06-14 05:12:31 UTC

@M4Gunner Yes but you can have faith in concepts or things or people

2018-06-14 05:12:42 UTC

Instead of the most minimalistic idea possible

2018-06-14 05:12:45 UTC

Faith in people is stupid.

2018-06-14 05:13:09 UTC

Faith in people creates idiology of people like hitler or stalin

2018-06-14 05:13:24 UTC

And those work themselves out

2018-06-14 05:13:33 UTC

People are inherently greedy and always want more for themselves

2018-06-14 05:13:50 UTC

*Work themselves out*

2018-06-14 05:13:50 UTC

Oh, I'm talking about grown ass adults

2018-06-14 05:13:54 UTC

yes i also agree

2018-06-14 05:14:11 UTC

Lots of people sleepwalking through life thinking that everything is fine and dandy

2018-06-14 05:14:22 UTC

Tell that to the millions killed by communism and nazism due to faith in people

2018-06-14 05:14:39 UTC

Not saying you need to be #WOKE to be worthy to me, just have some activity going on in the head

2018-06-14 05:14:54 UTC

@Goblin_Slayer_Floki Like I said, worked itself out

2018-06-14 05:15:00 UTC

Lmao

2018-06-14 05:15:02 UTC

why did you specify Nazism? could have just said socialism smh

2018-06-14 05:15:10 UTC

Let's not get into that

2018-06-14 05:15:16 UTC

I think religious faith is about choosing to believe that things will ultimately turn out alright and that there is a meaning and purpose behind existence, as opposed to nothing mattering at all. the details don't matter that much, and people killing over religion i think goes against the whole point

2018-06-14 05:15:27 UTC

I specified nazism because you can identify the person directly
