In all seriousness, is that cable management alright?

2019-01-29 03:33:06 UTC

First time building a machine with somewhat modern parts.

2019-01-29 04:01:19 UTC

it doesnt look bad but the bottem part is almost too blurry to tell

2019-01-29 04:01:50 UTC

2019-01-29 13:12:33 UTC

what are those seagates

2019-01-29 13:13:24 UTC

dead

2019-01-29 13:24:46 UTC

No

2019-01-29 13:27:08 UTC

Seagate, Toshiba, hgst

2019-01-29 13:28:39 UTC

@nitrokojote looks fine you could maybe hide that sata cable by looping it behind the case backplate

2019-01-29 13:29:02 UTC

Other than that it's good

2019-01-29 13:33:59 UTC

I was thinking about that, but it put too much stress on the cable, so I left it be

2019-01-29 13:34:28 UTC

It's not s long cable

2019-01-29 13:35:13 UTC

Thanks though. It's an okay machine, it's better than what I used to rock

2019-01-29 13:38:11 UTC

i5-2400, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, GTX 650 2 GB OC, Biostar TH61A, and a Thermaltake Smart 500W

2019-01-29 13:48:15 UTC

I've seen people curl sata cables around screwdrivers which helped with keeping a tidy look when plugged in

2019-01-29 13:48:57 UTC

Don't know if that's any good on the cable though

2019-01-29 15:18:52 UTC

,my friend its 2019

2019-01-29 15:18:55 UTC

correct solut ion is no sata

2019-01-29 15:18:57 UTC

all m.2 nvme

2019-01-29 15:20:27 UTC

you can do nvme over a sata cable

2019-01-29 15:20:31 UTC

with some SAS adapters <:alismirk:230784726615588865>

2019-01-29 15:37:25 UTC

you used to get thin sata connectors but I think they're not offered anymore

2019-01-29 15:38:26 UTC

nvm

2019-01-29 17:30:09 UTC

Eh, oh well, it's only one SATA cable.

2019-01-29 17:33:35 UTC

that cable management looks alright

2019-01-29 17:35:01 UTC

easier to work with a modern case with cable management features, than a huge tower from 2007 that hardly has anything

2019-01-29 17:35:23 UTC

Or just sprawling a BTX motherboard, two power supplies, and all that fun stuff on one side of a desk

2019-01-29 17:36:13 UTC

really though it's just a Rosewill, you could tell by the cheap rivets on the plexiglass panel

2019-01-29 17:40:07 UTC

will you fall for the SFF meme one day?

2019-01-29 17:40:19 UTC

I did and haven't regretted a single thing

2019-01-29 17:40:36 UTC

maybe

2019-01-29 17:41:05 UTC

I'm stuck with ATX because the motherboard I have is that.

2019-01-29 17:41:30 UTC

I ain't paying another $70 CAD to get a Chinese board of questionable quality

2019-01-29 17:41:42 UTC

Thought my TH61A was doomed when it started acting up thanks to the lane bug

2019-01-29 17:41:49 UTC

But I figured out how to save it

2019-01-29 17:42:35 UTC

welp he's right

2019-01-29 17:42:37 UTC

smol computers are pretty neat

2019-01-29 17:42:57 UTC

nowadays there is little reason to go bigger than matx

2019-01-29 17:43:31 UTC

You can get a GPU more powerful than the one in my case around the same size

2019-01-29 17:43:34 UTC

And this is a short card.

2019-01-29 17:43:51 UTC

MSI GeForce GTX 650 2GB OC.

2019-01-29 17:48:45 UTC

2019-01-29 17:54:09 UTC

2019-01-29 17:56:10 UTC

this thing is thicc.

2019-01-29 17:56:57 UTC

The back of it looks like a rat's nest because I have a shitty d-link router with dd-wrt in bridged mode

2019-01-29 17:59:22 UTC

Pretty sure I got that DVI cable at a liquidation store brand new like

2019-01-29 17:59:23 UTC

2019-01-29 17:59:38 UTC

And I just, used it once, packed it away, and forgot about it

2019-01-30 00:01:30 UTC

after the format and linked my steam library map in steam settings literally every game needs a 500mb update?

2019-01-30 00:01:30 UTC

wtf

2019-01-30 00:02:12 UTC

some files get into appdata or something?

2019-01-30 00:02:38 UTC

workshop/steam cloud content?

2019-01-30 00:03:00 UTC

nah, its indie games/single player games

2019-01-30 00:08:17 UTC

oh ok seems like its only some games

2019-01-30 15:05:15 UTC

@porco can you recommend a small and cheap NUC or PC with 2 RJ45 connectors? i wanna build a small VPN server.

2019-01-30 15:17:52 UTC
2019-01-30 15:18:01 UTC

not sure if this counts as "cheap" though

2019-01-30 15:18:11 UTC

cheap for a small business

2019-01-30 15:18:15 UTC

up to 150 is fine

2019-01-30 15:18:27 UTC

thanks

2019-01-30 15:26:19 UTC

you're not going to get a NUC for 150

2019-01-30 15:26:36 UTC

go for the odroid

2019-01-30 15:26:56 UTC

kk

2019-01-30 15:27:01 UTC

do I really need 2 rj45s?

2019-01-30 15:27:09 UTC

it depends on what you want to do

2019-01-30 15:27:13 UTC

you might need 2 RJ45

2019-01-30 15:27:16 UTC

^

2019-01-30 15:27:17 UTC

or you might not

2019-01-30 15:27:39 UTC

Internet -> Router w/ modem -> VPN Server and everything else

2019-01-30 15:28:02 UTC

people would connect to router over internet and access files inside the network

2019-01-30 15:28:08 UTC

yes 2 x RJ45 might be more comfortable but you could do it with only one and use a switch in front

2019-01-30 15:28:20 UTC

it would be a lot more work and shit to maintain though

2019-01-30 15:28:24 UTC

VLANning etc

2019-01-30 15:28:42 UTC

I would go for 2 x RJ45

2019-01-30 15:29:02 UTC

ok. it has to go behind router, though, right?

2019-01-30 15:29:15 UTC

cause the vpn server doesn't have means to connect to internet

2019-01-30 15:29:29 UTC

not necessarily, you can put something in front of the router depending on your ISP

2019-01-30 15:29:49 UTC

what do you put that little nuc into? dont you need some eclosure?

2019-01-30 15:30:04 UTC

for example I have multiple WAN to my fiber, so I can put a switch in front of the router, the computers are behind the router, and the servers connect to the internet over the other WANs, without a router

2019-01-30 15:30:29 UTC

also has 2 x RJ45

2019-01-30 15:30:39 UTC

but since it's Chinese New Year next week, it might take a month to arrive

2019-01-30 15:31:17 UTC

Estimated Delivery Time: 8-17days

2019-01-30 15:31:23 UTC

2019-01-30 15:31:26 UTC

2019-01-30 15:31:29 UTC
