Because in what way is the output of steel going to be impacted by which country it is made in

2020-03-07 21:07:07 UTC

In a geographic sense

2020-03-07 21:08:00 UTC

These sorts of advantages are limited to the primary sector

2020-03-07 21:08:23 UTC

Abundance of ore, fertility of land and climate, how plentifull fish is (ignore aquaculture)

2020-03-07 21:12:03 UTC

The problem isn't just the product itself but also the supply chain and the ecosystem. Companies that do similar stuff settle in the same area (Silicon valley, shenzen...). It is not only absolute advantage but also relative. If you can outsource lesser, simpler work to developing countries you can focus more on higher tech.
And yes the larger the market the smaller the benefits of importing or the penalties for protection.
If protectionism made us richer why don't we boycott our moms and do laundry ourselves.

2020-03-07 21:14:18 UTC

Relative advantage is covered by Ricardo but it still presumes some countries are just magically better at things
I agree with the point about outsourcing less productive industries mostly because those lesser industries usually produce intermediate goods

2020-03-07 21:14:50 UTC

I wouldn't want to make all the steel here because using expensive steel would fuck with other industries that are more important

2020-03-07 21:15:06 UTC

To the point that a car might be too expensive for export for example

2020-03-07 21:15:25 UTC

I mostly follow ISI when it comes to protectionism

2020-03-07 21:15:41 UTC

Import substitution industrialization

2020-03-07 21:16:31 UTC

They aren't magically better. If you specialize you get better. You only have 24hours a day so if you focus all that time on one task you will be better at that task than if you divide your energy into multiple task.

2020-03-07 21:16:50 UTC

But is that actually what we see play out in reality

2020-03-07 21:17:03 UTC

Who on a technical level is better at producing stuff

2020-03-07 21:17:08 UTC

China or the West

2020-03-07 21:17:30 UTC

China only dominates because it can churn out the same stuff inefficiently but less costly

2020-03-07 21:17:53 UTC

Not because it's specialized

2020-03-07 21:18:00 UTC

Yeah carpenters are better carpenters than electricians.
That is a different question, yes there are differences in productivity in humans.

2020-03-07 21:19:09 UTC

If it is up to specialization you only need to shelter your own market to allow for domestic expertise to accumulate

2020-03-07 21:19:44 UTC

There's no reason why a nation which misses an opportunity to have a textile industry because of technology needs to be permanently out

2020-03-07 21:20:33 UTC

The only natural advantage in these things is in the primary sector

2020-03-07 21:21:22 UTC

So you import or would need to subsidize where there is a disadvantage in your own mining or whatever

2020-03-07 21:21:41 UTC

Since I don't like subsidies I would rather import the steel cheaply

2020-03-07 21:21:42 UTC

When it comes to making money it also depends how widespread the technology and knowledge is. If something is easy, lot's of people are able to do it so the profits are low because of competition.
If you are on the cutting edge of technology you might be the only one who has the product so you can sell it for almost any price.

2020-03-07 21:22:18 UTC

The spread of technology mostly depends on having capital spent into spreading it

2020-03-07 21:22:32 UTC

In a free trade system technologies spread through direct investment

2020-03-07 21:22:53 UTC

In a protectionist state domestic demand/purchasing power steps in

2020-03-07 21:23:12 UTC

This is why not every nation can be a free trade miracle like Singapore

2020-03-07 21:25:16 UTC

The problem with specialization is also size. If you shelter your 1 million people state they are not going to develop the same level of pharma industry as china. Certain technologies only make sense if you have millions or even billions of customers.
The most modern semiconductor manufacturing machines take such an insane up front cost to develop, you will only turn a profit if you can sell a billion chips.

2020-03-07 21:26:22 UTC

True which is why it's good to have a common market that allows for trade policies that make sense or you push outward via exports

2020-03-07 21:26:50 UTC

At that point you don't rely on just your own consumers anymore

2020-03-07 21:27:14 UTC

Good example is Samsung in South Korea

2020-03-07 21:27:31 UTC

Initially sheltered through tariffs etc.

2020-03-07 21:27:48 UTC

But eventually was capturing foreign markets

2020-03-07 21:28:33 UTC

But this can't happen if your industries don't develop in the first place or are crushed with cheap shit

2020-03-11 19:41:59 UTC

reminder

2020-03-11 19:45:31 UTC

Never have I ever seen a black man get his point across to eloquently.

2020-03-11 19:47:18 UTC

alan keyes would've been a good president

2020-03-11 19:47:35 UTC

@Norik Could i have more sources of this man.

2020-03-11 19:47:42 UTC

I need to binge.

2020-03-11 19:48:36 UTC

bruh just google it lmao

2020-03-11 19:49:02 UTC

Ty

2020-03-11 19:50:11 UTC

What does he identify as?.

2020-03-11 19:50:16 UTC

Poltically.

2020-03-11 19:50:32 UTC

just conservative

2020-03-11 19:50:39 UTC

back when that actually meant something

2020-03-11 19:51:03 UTC

he was not even particularly remarkable back in the day

2020-03-11 19:51:25 UTC

we've just become used to a conservative movement led by jews and atheists

2020-03-11 19:51:35 UTC

Oh i know.

2020-03-11 19:52:32 UTC

Some points i do disagree with him.

2020-03-11 19:52:34 UTC

Alan Keyes was the sacrificial lamb for the Senate Race in Illinois. They put him in there to lose.

2020-03-11 19:52:49 UTC

But overall he is a well attunted.

2020-03-11 19:54:08 UTC

Jack Ryan was the guy originally running against Obama in 2004. They leaked his divorce records and he had to drop out.

2020-03-11 19:54:36 UTC

Scummy.

2020-03-11 19:55:08 UTC

sorry not leaked

2020-03-11 19:55:10 UTC

Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider ruled that several of the Ryans' custody records should be opened to the public.

2020-03-11 19:55:34 UTC

lmao 42:48

2020-03-12 19:51:27 UTC

He was made to lose elections.

2020-03-12 23:10:41 UTC

Sadly it doesn't amount to much yet

2020-03-12 23:11:12 UTC

Hรถcke definitely has sympathies going that way

I guess thereโ€™s one thing I can be proud of my country for

2020-03-20 03:09:16 UTC

lol

2020-03-20 15:15:01 UTC

Academy of Ideas is lolbert
But its still interesting to watch

2020-03-20 21:44:24 UTC

it's just shit more then anything

2020-03-21 00:20:55 UTC

it's pretty good

2020-03-21 18:13:54 UTC

@Mr. Nessel which cultural practices in germany do you want to preserve

2020-03-21 18:18:21 UTC

There aren't that many really but the festivities like Oktoberfest and Carnival I'd like to keep around
Most are just generically Euro-American or even global at this point like christmas

2020-03-21 18:18:50 UTC

You could try to repopularize St.Martin's day in favour of halloween I think

2020-03-21 18:19:37 UTC

Unless we dig up old norms which are more "Prussian" than strictly German

2020-03-21 18:20:53 UTC

German culture is more material culture than anythign else really which makes it sad we've put away focus from our art, music, architecture and the like

2020-03-21 18:21:41 UTC

At this point it's not just about preservation but restoration since it's been stripped down to essentials

2020-03-21 18:22:05 UTC

Stuff like how Dresden is restoring its historical city is a step in the right direction

2020-03-21 18:22:29 UTC

seems fair enough

2020-03-22 13:21:35 UTC

Frankfurt is rebuilding the old town

2020-03-22 14:24:36 UTC

Nice

2020-03-22 14:25:09 UTC

I'd like to see a revival of brickstone gothic or Grรผnderzeit architecture

2020-03-22 14:55:47 UTC

Based

2020-03-22 14:56:48 UTC

Looks like all those tourismbux Poland and Hungary are getting might finally be waking the right people up in real countries

2020-03-22 15:16:04 UTC

@Norik Tourismbux?

2020-03-22 15:35:49 UTC

Money from tourism

2020-03-22 15:36:14 UTC

Because places like Budapest have become the new big meme destinations for people who want to actually experience Europeโ„ข๏ธ

2020-03-22 15:36:50 UTC

For, uh, obvious reasons

2020-03-22 15:56:01 UTC

When you are from real country and need to go to "fake" country to experience some authenticity it really tells you something.
