This is why not every nation can be a free trade miracle like Singapore
The problem with specialization is also size. If you shelter your 1 million people state they are not going to develop the same level of pharma industry as china. Certain technologies only make sense if you have millions or even billions of customers.
The most modern semiconductor manufacturing machines take such an insane up front cost to develop, you will only turn a profit if you can sell a billion chips.
True which is why it's good to have a common market that allows for trade policies that make sense or you push outward via exports
At that point you don't rely on just your own consumers anymore
Good example is Samsung in South Korea
Initially sheltered through tariffs etc.
But eventually was capturing foreign markets
But this can't happen if your industries don't develop in the first place or are crushed with cheap shit
